Pet Stories
Being responsible for a life is always peppered with experiences and emotions across the spectrum. No two people will have the same. Living with a dog is an experience that makes one giggle and groan, quite often at the same time. If that dog is an Indie? Well, the sky's the limit!
As someone who interacts with dogs day in and day out, Indies as a breed are strong. They are resilient, and more than anything, they are insanely adaptable.
Having moved 8 houses in 9 years with at least three of them at any given point in time (the Indian world wasn't as pet friendly a few years ago as it is now), it takes me longer to settle down after a shift. They sniff, argue over favorite Sheldon-level sofa spots, confirm food and water spots, and bam. Settled. It takes me a couple months, and they scoff at my discomfort constantly.
Their extremely protective nature results in royal announcements regarding the arrival of anything and everyone. But hey, they also help in making friends. Their innate need to exercise and be socialized has pushed me out of the house so many times, when all I have wanted to do is vegetate on the couch.
As one who has lived with them for over 25 years, these are a few things that have helped me be a better Indie mom.
Activity and mental stimulations are your best friends. No other living being defines the ‘idle mind, devil’s workshop’ proverb better than Indies. They can rip through furniture and all things dear in a matter of hours, if not safely stimulated.
Training is a very important and necessary part of life. Not primarily food driven, training an Indie is a task, but is immensely rewarding. They pick up fast and don't forget easily. But as is with everything, reiteration is key. Basic commands – Sit, stay, heal, stop and the famed ‘drop it!’ are a must.
Extremely loyal by nature, their possessiveness is humbling. My pack has weeded out probable disaster-level boyfriends better than any colony aunty on the planet.
There is still a stigma attached to adopting Indies and street dogs, and some people may be hesitant due to misconceptions about their behavior or suitability as pets. These dogs are not just survivors; they are thrivers, ready to become a cherished member of your family.
