Many pet owners dream of taking their furry companions along on train journeys. But can you bring your dog on an Indian train? What are the regulations and costs involved?

This article will be your guide to a smooth pet travel experience on Indian trains. We'll cover everything you need to know, including Indian trains rules, pet travel regulations, and the associated rules and charges.

Know Before You Go: Important Regulations

Before booking your tickets, it's crucial to understand Indian Railways' limitations on pet travel. Here's a breakdown of the key regulations:

  • Allowed Species: Currently, only dogs are permitted to travel on Indian trains. Other pets like cats, birds, or rodents are not allowed.
  • Compartment Restrictions: Taking your dog with you in your cabin is only possible in AC First Class and First Class compartments. Other classes like AC 2 Tier, AC 3 Tier, Sleeper Class, and Second Class compartments strictly prohibit pets.

Two Options for Pet Travel on Indian Trains

Indian Railways offers two options for pet travel, depending on the size of your dog and your preference:

AC First Class/First Class Compartment: This is the most comfortable option for you and your pet. Here, your dog can travel with you in your designated cabin provided you have a confirmed ticket for yourself. There are charges associated with this, which we'll discuss later in the article.

Dog Box in Luggage Van/Brake Van: This option is suitable for smaller dogs who can be comfortably accommodated in a dog box. These dog boxes are metal cages provided within the luggage van or brake van of the train. This is a more economical option compared to travelling in a compartment with your pet.

Booking and Documentation Requirements

Booking for AC First Class/First Class Compartment: You cannot book your pet's travel directly while booking your own ticket. You'll need to visit the Parcel Office of the originating station at least 3 hours before your departure. Here, you'll need to present your confirmed ticket, a valid photo ID, and a veterinary certificate issued within the last 30 days, stating your dog's breed, colour, and health status. The pet charges will be calculated based on your dog's weight.

Booking for Dog Box in Luggage Van/Brake Van: Similar to the above process, visit the Parcel Office at least 3 hours before departure. Carry your confirmed ticket, ID proof, a doctor's certificate for your dog, and ensure your dog is securely placed in a well-ventilated and comfortable dog box that meets the size requirements. The Parcel Office staff will weight your dog and determine the charges.

Important Considerations for a Smooth Journey

Pet's Comfort: Ensure your dog is comfortable in its carrier or dog box. Line it with familiar bedding and provide fresh water and food bowls. For journeys longer than a few hours, consider packing absorbent puppy pads or a portable litter box for larger dogs.

Food and Water: It's your responsibility to ensure your dog has access to fresh water and food throughout the journey. Pack sufficient food based on your travel duration and consider adding a water dispenser to the carrier for long trips.

Leash and Muzzle: Always carry a leash and muzzle for your dog. While leashes are mandatory at stations and while boarding/deboarding, using a muzzle at the discretion of the authorities might be required depending on your dog's breed or temperament.

Hygiene and Cleanliness: Clean up after your pet during the journey. If your dog travels in the compartment with you, ensure proper hygiene by carrying pet wipes or a portable cleaning kit.

Charges for Pet Travel on Indian Trains

The charges for pet travel on Indian trains vary depending on the chosen mode of travel:

AC First Class/First Class Compartment: The charges are based on your dog's weight and are generally higher than the dog box option. Expect to pay around Rs. 60 per kilogram.

Dog Box in Luggage Van/Brake Van: This is a more economical option with charges starting from Rs. 30 per kilogram.

These are base charges, and additional minimum charges might apply depending on the travel distance.

Conclusion

Travelling with your pet on Indian trains can be a rewarding experience with proper planning and adherence to the regulations. By following these guidelines and ensuring your dog's comfort throughout the journey, you can create a memorable travel experience for both of you. Remember, a little preparation goes a long way in ensuring a smooth and stress-free train journey for you and your furry companion.
