After one of the worst wildfire seasons in Chile’s history, a groundbreaking effort began to bring new life to the devastated forests of the El Maule region. In early 2017, wildfires burned through over 1.4 million acres, destroyed nearly 1,500 homes, and claimed at least 11 lives.

As communities worked to rebuild, an extraordinary reforestation project emerged, led by an unlikely team of heroes: three Border Collies named Das, Summer, and Olivia.

Meet the Canine Heroes: Das, Summer, and Olivia

Das, a six-year-old Border Collie, and her daughters, Summer and Olivia, became key players in this initiative. Equipped with specially designed backpacks loaded with native plant seeds, the dogs roamed the charred forest, scattering seeds as they ran. Their playful but purposeful work aimed to restore life to the scorched land.

This innovative project was the brainchild of Francisca Torres and her sister, Constanza, who run a dog training center called Pewos. Starting in March 2017, the sisters brought the dogs into the burnt forests, monitoring the progress over several months. The dogs could cover up to 18 miles a day, dispersing more than 20 pounds of seeds during each outing.

Why Border Collies?

Border Collies are perfectly suited for this demanding task. Known for their intelligence, speed, and stamina, they excel in challenging terrain. Originally bred for herding, they are highly focused and less likely to be distracted by wildlife, making them efficient seed carriers. According to Francisca, the dogs truly enjoyed their work. “It’s like a countryside adventure where they can run as fast as they can. They love it!” Their joy not only fueled their efforts but also made them a vital part of ecological recovery.

A Positive Impact

The results have been encouraging. Francisca reports signs of vegetation and wildlife returning to areas the dogs worked. The trio has reforested 15 different forests in El Maule since the project began. Using dogs for seed dispersal is also more eco-friendly and cost-effective than mechanical methods like drones, which can be expensive and leave a larger carbon footprint.

A Community United

The local community rallied around the project. Residents were inspired by the sight of Das, Summer, and Olivia sprinting through the barren landscape, sowing seeds of hope along the way. For many, the dogs became a symbol of resilience and recovery after the devastation.

The initiative also became an educational opportunity. Workshops and community discussions focused on reforestation, biodiversity, and sustainable practices. People from different backgrounds came together, united by their shared love for nature and a commitment to restore it.

Overcoming Challenges

Like any new idea, the project faced its share of skepticism. Some questioned whether dogs could effectively reforest such a large area, while others expressed concerns about animal welfare. However, the team’s transparency and the visible signs of regrowth helped address these doubts. Gradually, even the skeptics embraced the project.

A Legacy of Hope

Das, Summer, and Olivia’s story has become more than just a local success—it’s a global inspiration. Their efforts have sparked conversations about innovative approaches to conservation and the incredible bond between humans, animals, and nature. As wildfires continue to threaten ecosystems worldwide, this project serves as a shining example of how creativity and collaboration can lead to meaningful change.

By restoring forests and bringing communities together, these three dogs have left an enduring legacy—a reminder that even the simplest acts of care and ingenuity can help heal the planet.

Conclusion

Das, Summer, and Olivia prove that innovation and nature can work together to heal our planet. Their efforts have restored hope to Chile's forests and inspired communities worldwide to explore sustainable, creative solutions for ecological recovery.
