Are you thinking about getting a Belgian Malinois puppy? These intelligent, energetic dogs are known for their loyalty and athleticism. But before you bring one home, it's important to understand the breed and what it takes to raise a well-trained Malinois.
In this interview, we chat with Madhu Gowda, a former defense dog handler and head breeder and trainer at Highbrook Kennels, about his experience breeding and training Belgian Malinois.
Madhu: I have been around dogs since 2018, and my love for dogs has only grown. We always had dogs as pets at home, but breeding wasn't something we ever considered. Over time, however, raising these dogs sparked an interest in breeding.
Madhu: The Belgian Malinois breed is what truly motivated me to get into breeding. You see them all over the world working with paramilitary forces and police departments, and there's a reason for that. These dogs are incredibly healthy and have amazing stamina. They don't get tired easily, and some can even walk for 40 kilometers in a day!
What drew me in, though, goes beyond their physical strength. The Belgian Malinois is also known for being highly intelligent and easy to train. They are incredibly loyal as well. These qualities make them not just fantastic working dogs but also wonderful companions.
Madhu: As a dog trainer, I hear this question a lot: "When can I start training my puppy?" While puppies can start formal obedience training around 3 months old, which coincides with their prey drive stage, building a strong foundation actually begins much earlier
.
Around 40 days old, puppies can be introduced to socialization. This means exposing them to different sights, sounds, people, and animals in a positive way. This step helps them become well-adjusted companions who are comfortable in various situations.
We also allow puppies time to adapt to their new environment after they arrive. This period of adjustment helps them feel safe and secure in their new home. Then, at 3 months old, we can formally introduce basic commands and obedience training. This is a prime time for them to start learning essential skills like "sit," "stay," and "come".
Madhu: As a dog lover myself, I'm often asked what it takes to be a great pet parent. Here's my key piece of advice: dedicate time to your furry friend.
Think of it like this: Aim for at least an hour of quality time with your dog in the morning and evening. This dedicated time allows you to build a strong bond and provides your dog with the mental and physical stimulation they crave.
Remember, a dog left alone for extended periods or kept constantly tied up is likely to become bored, frustrated, and potentially develop behavioral problems.
Madhu: I'm impressed with Happy Pet's mission to connect responsible breeders with potential pet owners. Platforms like these can be a valuable tool for increasing visibility and recognition for reputable kennels like Highbrook Kennels.
So, there you have it! This interview with Madhu Gowda, head trainer at Highbrook Kennels, offered a glimpse into the world of Belgian Malinois breeding and training. We learned about their exceptional health and stamina, the importance of early socialization, and the time commitment required to raise a happy, well-adjusted Malinois. If you're considering welcoming a Belgian Malinois into your life, remember that these intelligent, energetic dogs thrive with an active lifestyle and dedicated training.
