Cats, with their peaceful slumber and dreamy repose, present an image of pure contentment that can warm any heart. But if you have a cat, you might start to wonder why they sleep so much. When do they have time to play, walk across your keyboard while you work, or walk around the house asking for your attention with their cute meows?

Believe it or not, cats can sleep for about 15 to 20 hours every day. That’s a lot of sleep! And it can change depending on how old they are. Older cats tend to sleep more than younger ones. But their love for sleep isn’t just because they’re lazy. There are many reasons why they like to nap so much.

1. Genes

Cats sleep a lot, and this is mostly genetic. In the wild, cats are naturally predators. They hunt during night, namely in the twilight hours of dawn and dusk. They curl up and sleep for the remainder of the day to replenish the energy they spend while hunting.

Furthermore, even though your domesticated cats receive their favourite food from their devoted parents and don't need to go hunting, their genetic make-up may still have an influence on them.

2. Energy saving

Cats sleep a lot for other reasons, including energy saving. When they are fully cognizant of their surroundings, including the noises and scents, they like taking short catnaps or naps that last up to thirty minutes.

Certain sounds may cause their tails to wag and their ears to twitch. At these moments, they are on guard and prepared to attack any stray rats that could venture into their territory. They just spend a few minutes during their catnaps in a deep sleep state.

3.Bored

Just like people, cats also fall asleep due to boredom. Cats who see their parents working a lot may become bored and lose interest in playing alone, which leads to their falling asleep.

Giving them cat toys to play with is the greatest method to keep them busy. Like dogs, cats also like playing fetch or chase. Cats also like to play hide-and-seek. They stay content, active, and healthy thanks to these games.

Both cerebral and physical stimulation are excellent for their emotional well-being and for fortifying your relationship with them. Your cat will also have a restful night's sleep thanks to these games.

4. Change in season

A change in the weather also causes cats to sleep more. Like how they affect humans, cats can also be greatly impacted by winter and wet seasons. Cats enjoy spending longer hours of sleep and cuddling up on their beds during the cold, much like humans do.

5. Stress

Extended periods of sleep together with sedentary behaviour indicate stress. Your cat may be sleeping more as a coping mechanism for any underlying factors that may be causing anxious emotions. Observing your cat closely will assist you in determining the cause of their apparent lethargy or excessive sleepiness. Cats object to abrupt changes in their routine or environment.

They become melancholy or nervous about it. In these situations, individuals either avoid their family or only communicate with a single person. In addition to being very sleepy, such behavior warrants attention and a visit to your veterinarian.

6. Underlying illness

Cats who are ill also tend to sleep more and be less active. Your cat may choose to spend more time in bed if there is an underlying ache, as any movement must hurt. If they are overweight, they may also feel pain and discomfort, which makes them more likely to sleep.

It's crucial to see your veterinarian for a thorough physical because being overweight can cause major health issues.

Conclusion

In summary, cats sleep for over 15 hours a day; they need the rest to maintain their energy levels. Cats that have been domesticated still have their innate hunting instincts. However, it is crucial to keep an eye out for any underlying reasons if you find your cat napping for longer than usual. See a veterinarian right away for a thorough examination if there is a health concern. Additionally, if your cat appears gloomy or nervous due to any changes in their schedule, make sure you spend quality time with them by playing games or getting them toys they like. As a result, they'll feel relaxed and resume their usual sleeping schedule.
