While many people are familiar with catnip, not everyone is aware of the exact kind of plant it is or the scientific basis for its ability to influence a cat's emotions and behavior.
So what exactly is catnip? Here are some things you should know regarding this
plant's potential effects on your kitty companion.
Nepetacataria, commonly known as catnip, is a common herb belonging to the mint family. It's a light-green foliage plant with lavender flowers that grows easily in North America. Catnip flowers are said to soothe coughs, and the leaves can be used to brew tea. It is also a primary component of some natural insect repellents.
Cats possess a special olfactory organ in the roof of their mouth called the vomeronasal gland. This unique feature allows scents gathered in the mouth and nose to reach the brain, which explains why cats make a puckering motion when they encounter certain smells.
The leaves of the catnip plant contain an essential oil called nepetalactone, which is responsible for altering cat behavior. To experience its effects, a cat must smell the catnip.
What exactly attracts cats to catnip? Nepetalactone mimics feline sex hormones, leading cats to exhibit behaviors reminiscent of a female cat in heat. It's worth noting that catnip can affect both male and female cats equally.
Catnip comes in various forms, including:
If your cat experiences an upset stomach from consuming catnip, you can try catnip sprays instead. Simply spray your cat's preferred scratcher, toy, or cat tree. Alternatively, you can roll a toy in dried catnip or sprinkle it on your cat's furniture.
For cats prone to separation anxiety, some veterinarians recommend using catnip. It can help alleviate discomfort and reduce anxiety, particularly in cats who respond positively to it.
Not all cats respond to catnip's active ingredient. Research suggests that about 60% of cats show behavioral reactions to catnip. If your cat doesn't respond, consider trying silvervine instead
The duration of catnip effects can vary from cat to cat. Typically, the effects of sniffing catnip peak after about ten minutes and then slowly diminish. Afterward, the cat may need to
wait around 30 minutes without exposure to catnip before they become susceptible to its effects again. To preserve its potency, it's advisable to store catnip in an airtight container to maintain its freshness over time.
Catnip poses no harm to kittens, but generally, cats won't respond to it until they reach 6 months to 1 year of age. However, there are exceptions to this guideline.
Cats can consume catnip safely, and it might offer benefits for their digestive system. Catnip has been utilized in humans for its ability to alleviate diarrhea. However, it's crucial to ensure that your cat doesn't ingest excessive amounts of catnip, as this could lead to digestive issues.
The strongest catnip experience begins with the nose; your cat will go crazy the moment they catch a whiff of it. Researchers believe the plant acts on brain "happy" receptors found in cats. But when your cat eats it, it usually has the reverse effect, making them calmer.
Cats cannot experience an overdose from catnip, yet excessive consumption can lead to health issues like vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or difficulty walking. Administer only a tablespoon at a time and consult your veterinarian for guidance on the appropriate dosage for your cat.
Fresh catnip holds greater potency than its dried counterpart, necessitating smaller quantities for your cat. It is also advised to steer clear of highly concentrated catnip oils due to their intense potency.
When cats have catnip, they often roll around, flip, rub against things, and sometimes even fall asleep. But not all cats react to it the same way. Some become playful or relaxed, while others become agitated or aggressive. It's important to learn how to use catnip safely. Asking a vet for advice is always a good idea to ensure that you're doing it right and keeping your furry friends healthy and happy.
