Dog breeding is a little-known but vital thread that runs through the lives of people who live with four-legged pets in India's rich cultural tapestry. Due to the public's fascination with purebred dogs, a network of committed organisations has emerged to maintain pedigree standards, ethical breeding methods, and the shared love of canine companionship. These organisations, which range from the esteemed Kennel Club of India (KCI) to niche groups focused on particular breeds like the All India Boxer Club and the Dobermann Club of India, are the foundation of a flourishing society dedicated to maintaining the welfare and integrity of man's best friend.

This article takes the reader on a tour of Indian dog breeding associations, delving into their functions, effects, and the common passion that unites breeders, enthusiasts, and the cherished dogs they support.

One of the most important organisations in the Indian subcontinent for dog care and pedigree management is the Kennel Club of India (KCI). Indian National Kennel Club (INKC)

The Indian National Kennel Club (INKC) was established in 1957, as a non-profit organisation, to increase the awareness, love, and popularity of dogs and to promote proper breeding, rearing, and training of dogs.

The motto of INKC is “Dogs for a Good Life; A Good Life for Dogs.”

Founded with a commitment to uphold the standards of dog breeding and welfare, the INKC serves as the national authority for pedigree registration, dog shows, and the overall improvement of canine breeds.

Here are a list of tasks taken care by INKC:

  • Spread the love of dogs, which is beneficial to all of human society. Acceptance and understanding of the dog as a companion is the beginning for a person to relate to nature, where we all have our roots.
  • Encourage children to relate well to dogs. This ensures that they do not get paranoid when a dog gets close to them, as some parents themselves behave and, unfortunately, also cause their children to behave.
  • Encourage kindness towards all animals, through the initial love of dogs.
  • They make an effort to get dogs more generally accepted in every-day life, so as to reduce the hurdles dog-owners have to face, particularly while travelling.
  • Open to all dog-owners who wish to know about the proper manner of rearing a puppy, and its training, so that both are compatibly attuned to each other, besides behaving responsibly towards society.
  • Help dog owners locate a suitable vet in their area.
  • Maintain a very rigidly accurate Register of pure-bred dogs, which forms the basis of proper dog breeding.
  • Conduct Dog Shows, Obedience Tests, etc., where participants as well as the public are made aware of the importance of dog breeding and training.
  • Render free advice to anyone who intends to acquire a dog, so as to ensure that he/she is worthy of keeping a dog, and that the selection of type of dog is suitable for their needs.
  • Help buyers to locate a suitable dog, without charging any commission.
  • Help the Members to find suitable buyers for their puppies, without charging any commission.
  • Help bitch-owners find suitable mates.
  • Organise workshops and seminars to spread to all dog-lovers the latest knowledge about dog-keeping.

The aim of their endeavour is to provide general dog owners and hobby breeders with information, education, and empowerment so they may better understand their dogs and build mutually satisfying relationships.

Conclusion

Indian dog breeding associations stand as pivotal players in shaping the landscape of responsible dog breeding in the country. Through their commitment to promoting ethical practices, preserving breed standards, and ensuring the overall well-being of canines, these associations contribute significantly to the world of companion animals.
