A recent study has shed light on pet food budgets in the vast and diverse regions of Asia and Oceania. The study focused on the financial implications of feeding a medium-sized dog, specifically based on the cost of the most affordable dry dog food available in each location. The findings revealed a surprising range in pet food expenditures across the two continents.

Here's a breakdown of the estimated annual expense for feeding a medium-sized dog with the cheapest dry food available in each location (USD prices with approximate INR equivalents in brackets):

  1. Japan: (US)$2,056.88 (₹1,50,000) - This tops the list, likely due to a preference for premium dog food.
  2. Sri Lanka: (US)$913.23 (₹66,500)
  3. Singapore: (US)$838.33 (₹61,000)
  4. Thailand: (US)$817.31 (₹60,000)
  5. Fiji: (US)$791.79 (₹58,000)
  6. New Zealand: (US)$785.25 (₹57,500)
  7. Pakistan: (US)$612.32 (₹44,500)
  8. South Korea: (US)$498.27 (₹36,500)
  9. Brunei: (US)$490.78 (₹36,000)
  10. Taiwan: (US)$419.82 (₹30,500)
  11. Malaysia: (US)$403.44 (₹29,500)
  12. Philippines: (US)$340.59 (₹25,000)
  13. Vietnam: (US)$307 (₹22,500) - This is the most affordable country for basic dog food.

Japan emerged as the region with the highest annual pet food budget, clocking in at a staggering $2,057. This can be attributed to the strong preference of Japanese dog owners for super-premium and gourmet dog food options. These high-quality foods are priced significantly higher than their standard counterparts, significantly inflating the overall pet food budget in Japan. Several other factors come into play when considering pet food spending across Asia and Oceania. Currency exchange rates play a significant role, with fluctuations directly impacting the affordability of imported pet food. Additionally, the geographical distance from major pet food exporting countries can influence the cost. Countries located further away from these exporters may face higher transportation costs, which are then reflected in the retail price of pet food.

On the other hand, browsing the web suggests that the annual pet food budget in India can range from ₹4,800 to ₹54,000 (which is roughly equivalent to $60 to $675) depending on the quality, brand, and portion size. This figure aligns with the second-lowest annual pet food budget identified in the study, though the specific country was not mentioned. It's important to acknowledge that this study solely based its calculations on the price of the cheapest dry dog food available.

This provides a starting point for understanding pet food affordability across Asia and Oceania, but it doesn't paint the entire picture. Pet owners have a wide range of choices when it comes to pet food, from budget-friendly options to premium and speciality formulas. The specific food a pet owner chooses will significantly impact their overall pet food spending.
