Pet Stories
Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year—not just for people, but for pets too! However, the festive season brings unique challenges for pet owners. With a little preparation and care, you can ensure your furry companions stay safe and enjoy the holiday cheer right along with you.
Decking the halls can be fun, but some decorations pose a risk to pets. Fragile glass ornaments, tinsel, and ribbons might look beautiful, but they can be harmful if chewed or swallowed. Broken glass can cut paws, and ingested tinsel or ribbon can cause blockages in your pet’s digestive system.
Instead, consider sturdy, pet-safe ornaments made of wood or fabric. Position delicate decorations higher up on the tree, out of reach of curious paws. And don’t forget to secure the tree! A wobbly tree can topple over if an excited pet jumps on it or pulls at the branches.
The holidays are full of delicious treats, but many of them are dangerous for pets. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and alcohol are all toxic to animals. Even small amounts can cause severe health problems.
Be mindful of where you place food and drinks. A snack platter on a low table or an unattended glass of eggnog can be irresistible to a curious pet. Inform guests not to share human food with your pets, no matter how much those puppy-dog eyes beg! Instead, provide pet-friendly treats to make them feel included.
Festive plants like Mistletoe, Holly, and Poinsettias are staples of Christmas decor, but they’re not safe for pets. If ingested, these plants can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and other serious health issues.
Opt for artificial plants or pet-safe options like Christmas cactus or rosemary. If you love the look of traditional holiday greenery, make sure it’s placed out of your pet’s reach.
Twinkling lights and festive decorations often come with a maze of electrical cords, which can be dangerous for pets, especially curious chewers. Secure cords along walls or use cord protectors to prevent chewing accidents. Unplug decorative lights when you’re not home to supervise.
Battery-operated decorations are a safer alternative. If you use candles, keep them on high shelves and never leave them unattended. Curious tails or paws can easily knock over a candle, creating a fire hazard.
Christmas gatherings can be noisy and overwhelming for pets, especially those who are shy or anxious. Set up a designated retreat for your pet where they can relax and feel safe. This could be a quiet room with their bed, favorite toys, and fresh water.
Let guests know that this is your pet’s safe space and should not be disturbed. This way, your furry friend can take a break from the excitement whenever they need to.
Wrapping gifts is a Christmas tradition, but it can also create hazards for pets. Wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, and small items like tags can be choking hazards if swallowed.
Keep wrapping supplies in a closed box or drawer when not in use. After the unwrapping frenzy, quickly pick up leftover materials to prevent curious pets from investigating them.
The Christmas feast is a highlight of the day, but it’s important to keep pets away from the table. Foods like turkey bones, fatty scraps, and sugary desserts can be harmful. Bones can splinter and cause internal injuries, while fatty foods can upset your pet’s stomach.
Instead, offer your pet a special treat made just for them. A holiday-themed dog biscuit or cat treat can make them feel part of the celebration without risking their health.
Holiday visitors can be exciting for pets, but they can also be overwhelming. Make sure your guests understand your pet’s boundaries. Not all pets enjoy being petted or picked up, and too much attention can make them anxious.
If your pet tends to dart out the door, ensure gates and doors remain closed. A collar with an updated ID tag or a microchip is a great safety measure in case your pet manages to escape during the commotion.
Candles and essential oils are popular during the holidays, but some scents can irritate your pet’s respiratory system. Avoid using essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus, and cinnamon, as they can be toxic.
Instead, opt for pet-safe alternatives. Unscented candles or natural pet-friendly diffusers are great options. Always supervise lit candles to prevent accidents.
No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. Keep your veterinarian’s contact information and the nearest emergency clinic’s details handy. Having these readily available can save valuable time in an emergency.
Consider creating a pet-first-aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers. Familiarize yourself with basic pet first aid to stay prepared.
Christmas is a time for love and togetherness, and your pets are an important part of the family. By taking these precautions, you can ensure they stay safe and happy during the festive season.
From choosing pet-friendly decorations to creating a cozy retreat, these small steps can make a big difference. Remember, your furry companions rely on you to keep them safe while they enjoy the holiday cheer. With thoughtful planning, you can create memories that will last a lifetime for you and your beloved pets.
