As dog ownership has reached record highs according to the Kennel Club, one in five households currently has at least one canine companion. Over the past few years, many of us have welcomed a new four-legged friend into our homes.

There is a lot of consideration to go through when choosing your ideal puppy, whether you want a large dog, a family-friendly dog, or a crossbreed, as there are 221 different breeds of pedigree dogs to pick from. Given that dogs typically live for just over 11 years, it is one of the sad realities of dog ownership that we will probably outlive our beloved companion. However, there's a sizable difference in lifespan between the longest-living and shortest-living breeds.

The average life expectancy of some of the most well-liked dog breeds has been determined through new research that was published in the journal Scientific Reports. The research used the Royal Veterinary College's Veterinary Companion Animal Surveillance System (VetCompass), a database that contains data on over two million animals. To arrive at their conclusions, researchers randomly selected 30,563 dogs that passed away over five years.

This is what they discovered:

1. Springer Spaniel

A healthy, energetic Springer Spaniel should live for approximately 11.92 years.

2. Yorkshire Terrier

Given that small dogs typically live longer than large dogs, the fact that the tiny Yorkshire Terrier comes in second place on this list with an average lifespan of 12.54 years is not surprising.

10. Chihuahua

The study's finding that tiny Chihuahuas only live an average of 7.91 years was one of the most unexpected findings, especially in light of the recent revelation that Toby Keith, a Florida Chihuahua who is 21 years old, is the oldest dog alive.

All four of the dog breeds that have the shortest lifespans, starting with the American Bulldog, are brachycephalic (flat-faced). The lower life expectancies are associated with the animals suffering from several conditions, including breathing problems and spinal disease.
