Mysuru Zoo’s Chamundi Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre has achieved a breakthrough with the birth of a lion-tailed macaque (LTM), an endangered species. This is the first macaque born at the center since its conservation breeding program began in collaboration with Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai.
The lion-tailed macaque is native to the Western Ghats, and habitat loss has placed it on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. Zoo Executive Director Mahesh Kumar highlighted the significance of this birth, noting its importance for species survival and future reintroduction into the wild.
In addition to LTMs, Mysuru Zoo has been actively breeding other endangered species such as the Indian Gaur, Grey Wolf, and Wild Dog. The zoo's participation in the Central Zoo Authority's conservation breeding initiative shows its commitment to reversing population declines in the wild.
This successful birth represents a hopeful step toward preserving endangered species and enhancing their chances of survival in their natural habitats.
