In the wake of the recent Wayanad landslides, a heartwarming story has emerged from the Kalpetta Fire Station, where the fire and rescue team has adopted a cat named Nyla, who was found alive amid the debris.

Nyla, which means "the achiever," was discovered by the scuba diving team from Thiruvananthapuram during their rescue operations at Mundakkai.

The scuba team, while clearing debris, found Nyla submerged in mud, yet miraculously alive. After being rescued, she was cleaned and taken to the Kalpetta Fire Station, where she quickly captured the hearts of the station staff.

Now a beloved member of the fire station, Nyla receives care and affection from around 50 personnel who feed her milk and eggs, ensuring her recovery and well-being.

In addition to Nyla, two puppies rescued from Chooralmala have been handed over to the military and police special defense group, highlighting ongoing efforts to rehome animals affected by the disaster.

The Animal Husbandry Department is actively working to find homes for other domestic animals, including cattle stranded by the landslides. They are prepared to transfer these animals to willing nearby dairy farmers, offering necessary treatments before adoption.

The Animal Husbandry Department has set up a 24-hour control room at Chooralmala, coordinating the rescue and adoption procedures. The department is efficiently transporting domestic animals and birds found in disaster-affected areas, including both living and deceased animals.

Veterinarians and field officers operate in two shifts, using cages and ambulances to transport small and large animals to the panchayat veterinary hospital in Meppadi.

The rescue operation is supported by NGOs and volunteers, who provide essential food and water to the rescued animals.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the protocol currently does not require postmortem examinations of deceased animals, but provisions are in place to dispose of any animal remains appropriately at Meppadi.

The efforts of the Kalpetta Fire Station and the Animal Husbandry Department demonstrate the dedication to ensuring the welfare of animals affected by the Wayanad landslides.

As Nyla finds her new home at the fire station, the combined efforts of various organizations and volunteers continue to provide shelter and care for other animals in need.
