Expertly trained Army dogs are being deployed to the landslide-ravaged area of Meppadi in Wayanad, Kerala to assist in search and rescue operations.
These dogs, known for their remarkable ability to detect signs of life and human remains under debris, hail from the elite Remount Veterinary Corps Centre (RVC) in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
The deployment comes after a request from the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, seeking assistance from the Army’s Canine Squad. The team comprises skilled breeds like Belgian Malinois, Labradors, and German Shepherds, trained specifically for operations in disaster zones.
They are accompanied by expert handlers and are capable of detecting the faintest human scents beneath rubble and mud, making them invaluable in locating survivors and victims in landslide-hit areas.
The landslide in Meppadi has caused significant destruction, with rescue efforts ongoing to find missing persons. The addition of the Army’s canine unit underscores the severity of the situation and the need for specialized expertise. According to the Defence Ministry, the canine team from RVC Meerut will work to pinpoint the location of trapped individuals, aiding in timely rescue efforts.
These dogs have previously played crucial roles in similar missions, demonstrating their ability to navigate challenging terrains and assist rescue teams where traditional methods may not suffice. The integration of trained animals into rescue operations highlights the collaboration between military units and government agencies, aiming to save lives and bring relief to affected communities.
As rescue efforts continue in Wayanad, the presence of these highly trained dogs brings hope and urgency to the mission, emphasizing the importance of specialized skills in overcoming natural disasters.
