In a remarkable milestone for wildlife conservation, a dedicated team of veterinarians successfully performed a groundbreaking surgery on a tigress named Chippi at the Itanagar Biological Park in Arunachal Pradesh. The collaborative effort involved Dr. Sorang Tadap, Veterinary Officer at the park, Dr. Nido Tayo, a senior surgeon from the state veterinary department, and Dr. Panjit Basumatary from the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).
Chippi, a 13-year-old tigress, was rescued from Angrim Valley in Dibang Valley district in 2012 and brought to the Itanagar Zoo for rehabilitation in 2013 under the care of WTI. In February 2024, two small lumps were discovered on the back of her neck. Despite initial symptomatic treatments, the lumps continued to grow, prompting the team to opt for surgery after consultations with senior wildlife officials.
Dr. Tadap shared insights into the situation: “The lumps on Chippi’s neck showed no improvement with initial treatments. Their increasing size made surgical intervention necessary, and after thorough consultations, we decided to proceed.”
The surgery, performed on June 30, 2024, was a first-of-its-kind event at the park. Overcoming resource limitations, the team demonstrated exceptional dedication. They utilized an oxygen cylinder from RKM Hospital, a multiparameter monitor from Dr. Tayo, and a pocket-sized pulse oximeter from Dr. Basumatary to monitor Chippi’s vital signs throughout the procedure.
Dr. Tadap emphasized the challenges faced: “Despite limited facilities, we managed to conduct the surgery successfully. The presence and support of senior officials like Dr. Damodhar, CF (WL&BD), and Conservator of Forests Subu Haniya were invaluable, boosting our morale.”
Tissue samples from the tumors have been sent to the College of Veterinary Science in Khanapara, Assam, for further analysis. The results will provide crucial insights into the nature of the tumors and guide future treatments.
Chippi is now in recovery and showing positive signs of improvement. This historic surgery marks a significant achievement for wildlife conservation efforts in Arunachal Pradesh, showcasing the dedication and expertise of the veterinary team. The success of this operation not only highlights the team's commitment but also sets a precedent for future wildlife medical interventions.
