A recent survey on bird populations in Kerala has revealed a concerning decline in the number of individual birds in several regions of the state.
Conducted simultaneously in Kochi, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, and nearby areas, the survey highlighted that while Kochi witnessed a slight increase in bird species count, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram experienced notable drops compared to previous years.
In last year’s count, the regions of Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kochi reported 212, 193, and 187 species, respectively.
This year, Kozhikode recorded 201 species, Thiruvananthapuram dropped to 183, and Kochi identified 192 species.
Inclement weather and challenges such as restricted access to certain areas due to wild elephants were identified as factors potentially affecting the accuracy of the count.
The annual bird survey, initiated in 2007 and coordinated across Kerala with the support of local organizations, involves over 500 participants ranging from students to professionals.
Participants survey over 100 locations, uploading their findings to a national birdwatching database.
In northern Kerala, birders explored locations like Sarovaram Biopark, Kappad, and Mavoor wetlands in Kozhikode, as well as areas in Kannur, Malappuram, and Wayanad.
Declines in migratory bird species, such as the white-bellied sea hawk, were noted in regions like Kadalundi and Madayipara, where human activities, including tourism and fishing, were identified as significant disruptions.
Thiruvananthapuram’s survey sites included the Punchakkari wetlands, Poovar, and forested areas like Ponmudi.
Species spotted included the great hornbill, lesser black-backed gull, and booted eagle.
Kochi birders reported sightings of red avadavat, Terek sandpiper, and blue-faced malkoha.
The survey signifies the need for conservation efforts to protect bird habitats and mitigate human impact on these fragile ecosystems.
