A seven-year-old cat named Marley has been awarded the title of Cats Protection’s National Cat of the Year 2024,. He is recognized for his exceptional empathy and connection with vulnerable women at a London safe house.
Marley, a black-and-white feline, lives at Caritas Bakhita House in the UK, a refuge for women who have experienced enslavement, exploitation, and trafficking.
The safe house adopted Marley four years ago after he was rescued from a shelter where he had suffered bullying from another cat.
Karen Anstiss, the head of Caritas Bakhita House, expressed pride in Marley’s achievement, telling BBC that his unique ability to offer comfort to the house's residents has been invaluable.
Many of the women, some of whom are from 11 different countries, found solace in Marley’s presence, with the cat playing a key role in their emotional recovery.
Marley’s gentle approach, often placing a paw on a guest’s leg, has been a powerful source of healing for many of the residents.
Beyond his role as an emotional support cat, Marley has become a beloved fixture at the safe house, joining therapy sessions, mealtime gatherings, and even becoming the subject of a song written by one of the residents.
Staff at the refuge described Marley to BBC as both the "fluffy heart" of their home and an unofficial "staff supervisor," diligently patrolling the garden and protecting his favorite patch of daisies.
Before being selected as the overall National Cat of the Year, Marley first won the "Incredible Cats" category in a public vote.
This category celebrates cats who inspire extraordinary acts of love through their bond with humans.
Marley’s win included a trophy and a prize package with a £200 pet store voucher.
Other category winners in this year’s National Cat Awards include Cilla, a school cat from Warwickshire. She helps calm pupils during stressful exams and inspired £5,000 in donations to restock her school’s library.
