Patients at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn, Norfolk, received a delightful surprise with the visit of Ted, a therapy cockapoo. On his first visit, Ted managed to cheer up the ward, bringing smiles and comfort to patients. Ted’s owner, Sara Headford, a nurse with 38 years of experience who trained at the hospital, enrolled Ted as a therapy dog with the charity Canine Concern after witnessing the positive impact therapy dogs can have.
Patient Irene Fiander, 70, expressed her joy, stating, "It’s so lovely seeing a dog on the ward – it’s a really nice distraction and makes everyone much happier." Ms. Headford, motivated by personal experience, hopes Ted will enhance patient wellbeing. She shared that Ted had a profound effect on her husband's grandmother, who cherished his visits until she passed away at 99.
Ted will now join Milo, another PAT (Pets As Therapy) dog, visiting patients at the hospital every other month. Joanne Rowe, the hospital trust's voluntary services manager, emphasized the benefits of dog therapy, saying, "Dog therapy is a great way to boost morale for patients on our wards. It’s a welcome distraction and provides extra stimulation, encouraging patients to be more active while in the hospital." The hospital is inviting more owners of PAT-registered dogs to get in touch and join the therapy program.
