To tackle the increasing number of fatalities resulting from vicious dog attacks, the Central government has requested that the state prohibit the importation, breeding, and sale of specific "ferocious" dog breeds. The breeds that are considered dangerous to human life include Rottweilers, Pitbulls, Terrier, Wolf dogs, and Mastiffs. Mixed breeds and crossbreeds of these breeds will also be prohibited. This ruling follows the submission of a report by an expert committee and animal welfare organisations in response to a Delhi High Court order.
To ensure that the prohibition is implemented, Dr O. P. Chaudhary, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, has written to the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories.
"...the above dog breeds, including crossbreeds, shall be prohibited for import, breedings, selling as pet dogs and other purposes," the letter said, quoting the recommendations of the expert panel.

The move followed a report by a joint panel of experts and animal welfare bodies in response to an order of the Delhi High Court. The court had directed the union government to decide the matter after consulting all stakeholders within three months.
