In a picturesque outdoor setting, golden retrievers Bree and Bond celebrated their union in a lavish wedding, complete with a white lace gown and a delectable cake, surrounded by their closest human and canine friends.
Pet weddings are becoming increasingly popular in China, where traditional human marriage rates are low despite government efforts to encourage them. The rise in pet ownership and a growing willingness to splurge on furry companions are driving this trend.
In 2023, spending on pets in China rose by 3.2%, reaching 279.3 billion yuan ($38.41 billion). "People have weddings. Why can't dogs have weddings?" said Bree’s owner, Rye Ling, after walking his pet down the aisle where she exchanged vows with Bond, promising to always share treats and play together.
According to Acuity Knowledge Partners, there were over 116 million cats and dogs in urban China in 2023. If spread evenly, about one in eight urban Chinese people own a pet, with most owners being under 40. Ling and his girlfriend Gigi Chen, who are in no hurry to marry themselves, meticulously planned Bree and Bond’s wedding for months. They hired professional photographers, designed wedding booklets, and ordered a custom-made 800-yuan cake with toppers resembling the canine couple.
Yang Tao, the owner of a Shanghai-based pet bakery that made the cake, was initially surprised by the demand for dog wedding cakes.
"I think there will be more and more dog weddings," she said, noting that she has catered several such events since her bakery's launch in 2022. "We have already received an order for a dog wedding a few months from now."
Ling hopes the ceremony gave Bree and Bond a "sense of ritual" and looks forward to welcoming puppies soon, emphasizing the growing trend of elaborate pet celebrations in China.
