The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a pilot project aimed at better managing and tracking street dogs in Bengaluru’s Mattikere and Malleswaram areas.
This new initiative, led by BBMP’s Health and Animal Husbandry division, focuses on implanting microchips in street dogs.
These microchips store key information such as the dogs' location, vaccination history, and sterilization records.
The microchips, smaller than a grain of rice, will be embedded under the dogs' skin and serve as a permanent record.
This will replace the current colour-coded system, which fades quickly and leads to repeated vaccinations.
By using this advanced technology, officials aim to improve data management and prevent the duplication of vaccinations, which has been an ongoing challenge.
The project could revolutionize street dog management in Bengaluru, ensuring more accurate tracking and enhancing public health initiatives.
If successful, the BBMP may expand the use of microchips citywide to improve vaccination efforts and street dog welfare.
