A recent study from the University of Geneva, published in PLOS Biology, has revealed that dogs respond better to human speech when it’s delivered more slowly.
This insight helps explain why dogs seem to react positively when spoken to in a playful, exaggerated tone, such as the typical "Who’s a good dog?" phrase that many dog owners use.
The study analyzed the vocal interactions between 30 dogs and 27 humans across five different languages, as well as interactions with humans specifically addressing dogs.
Researchers monitored brain responses using EEGs and found that dogs process speech at a slower tempo than humans.
While humans speak at about four syllables per second, dogs typically vocalize at a slower rate of two sounds per second.
Interestingly, when humans talk to dogs, they naturally reduce their speech to around three syllables per second, aligning with the dog’s processing abilities.
The study also identified differences in neural responses between humans and dogs.
While humans rely on faster theta rhythms to process speech, dogs respond through slower delta rhythms.
This finding underscores the importance of adjusting speech tempo to improve communication with dogs.
By slowing down our speech, dogs are more likely to understand and respond to commands and other messages, helping to build stronger bonds between humans and their furry companions.
The research highlights the role of tone and tempo in enhancing communication with dogs.
