Chennai: Wildlife officials in Tamil Nadu have developed a 'Standard Operating Procedure' (SOP) for the conservation of Olive Ridley Sea turtles along the state’s coastline, one of the world’s most significant nesting sites.
The SOP, formulated with the assistance of the Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network (SSTCN), aims to enable volunteers and conservationists to replicate successful conservation efforts from Chennai in other coastal regions of the state. The SSTCN has been actively involved in sea turtle conservation for over four decades.
A senior wildlife official highlighted that sea turtle conservation efforts originated in Chennai and have been successfully sustained. "We aim to replicate this model in other coastal districts of the state, which is why the SOP was developed," the official stated.
The SOP encompasses various aspects of conservation, including setting up hatcheries, locating and digging nests, patrolling the coast, probing the soil for eggs, and transporting the eggs to hatcheries. It specifies that hatcheries should be set up in different locations for the first two years and can be established in the same location from the third year onwards. Volunteers often begin patrolling in December to monitor the arrival of female turtles for nesting.
The guidelines also detail the construction of nests in hatcheries to resemble the natural nests built by turtles in the sand, similar to an earthen pot with a round neck. Specific measurements for the nest’s depth, height, width, and the dimensions of the chamber and neck are provided.
In recent years, forest department hatcheries have introduced thin jute coverings to provide shade and aeration while protecting the nests from direct sunlight and birds of prey. This SOP was developed with funding from the Tamil Nadu Biodiversity Conservation and Greening Project Climate Control Response and has been submitted to the Chief Wildlife Warden for approval.
