A small Indian civet, rescued in June from Papu Hill in Papum Pare district, is on the brink of a remarkable journey back to its natural habitat. The two-month-old civet, now receiving expert care at the Centre for Bear Rehabilitation & Conservation (CBRC) in Pakke-Kessang district, is showing promising signs of recovery.
The CBRC, a joint initiative by the Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR) and the Wildlife Trust of India, with support from the IFAW and KEPL, has been instrumental in nurturing the young civet back to health. Initially, the civet was housed at the Itanagar Biological Park before being transferred to the CBRC on June 28. Upon arrival, the civet was found to be severely stressed and weak. However, under the dedicated care of the CBRC team, the animal has made a remarkable recovery, demonstrating a healthy appetite and normal eating patterns.
The next step in the civet’s journey is a "soft release" back into the wild, a carefully monitored process that ensures the animal is fully prepared to survive on its own. Authorities are optimistic about the civet’s prospects and are planning to initiate this process in the coming days.
PTR’s Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Satyaprakash Singh, commended the efforts of the state’s forest department and the CBRC in rescuing the civet. He expressed his gratitude to the vigilant citizens whose timely information enabled the rescue, highlighting the importance of public awareness and cooperation in wildlife conservation. "We urge everyone to contact their nearest forest range office if they find any wildlife stranded or injured," Singh appealed.
The CBRC has a longstanding reputation for its exceptional work, particularly with the Asiatic black bear. Since its establishment in 2002, the center has rescued and rehabilitated over 60 orphaned bear cubs in Arunachal Pradesh. The CBRC’s collaborative efforts with the forest department extend beyond bears, encompassing a variety of distressed wildlife across the state.
This heartwarming story of the small Indian civet’s rescue and rehabilitation underscores the critical role of wildlife conservation efforts and the collective responsibility to protect and preserve our natural heritage.
