In Pune, a groundbreaking medical procedure was performed on Sasha, a two-year-old Labrador, who underwent liver surgery for the rare genetic disorder Hepatic Arteriovenous Malformation (HAVM). This marked the first time hepatic surgeons in Pune tackled such a complex case.

Local veterinary hospitals lacked the necessary facilities for this intricate surgery, prompting a collaborative effort between veterinarians and human doctors. Dr. Sagar Bhongale from Animal Medical Services Pune enlisted a liver surgeon from Ruby Hall Clinic to perform the delicate procedure in a city catheterization laboratory. Given the surgery's complexity, the team also sought guidance from specialists in the US, UK, and Canada.

"After thorough deliberation, we decided to undertake a high-risk three-hour surgery, costing over Rs6 lakh. The pet parent was determined to pursue all possible treatment options," said Dr. Bhongale.

Sasha's ordeal began on March 27 when she vomited blood and was rushed to emergency vet services. Initial antibiotic treatment for suspected food poisoning was ineffective, and Sasha's appetite diminished. Blood tests, an MRI, and a color Doppler scan revealed lumps on the left side of her liver. Dr. Bhongale then consulted Dr. Yadav Munde, an interventional radiologist specializing in vascular diseases, who confirmed HAVM.

"This genetic disorder is quite rare, even in humans. I had only seen one case of HAVM in a boy in Pune a couple of years ago," said Dr. Munde. HAVM is characterized by an abnormal connection between the liver's arterial and venous systems. The surgery took place on May 1.

Sasha's recovery included a bout of Babesia, a severe tick fever requiring blood transfusions and expensive treatments. However, Sasha has regained her strength and enthusiasm and is now enjoying playtime and long walks.

"She is more active now and her appetite has improved. We are feeding her bone broth, beetroot, spinach, and other foods to boost her hemoglobin, along with oral medication. Our pet is back to being a playful bundle of energy," said Shalu Bhatti, Sasha's owner.
