As people gathered at Mumbai's National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) to pay their last respects to Ratan Tata, who passed away at 86 following a short illness, one attendee held a particularly special place in his heart—his dog, Goa.
This poignant moment underscored Tata's enduring love for animals, especially dogs, which had been a significant aspect of his life.
Ratan Tata’s affection for animals extended beyond his personal life and became evident in his corporate ventures as well.
Notably, at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, Tata ensured stray animals were cared for, instructing hotel staff to treat them with respect and kindness.
This compassionate approach also extended to Bombay House, Tata Group's headquarters, where he established a sanctuary for stray dogs, complete with climate control, comfortable cushions, and unrestricted access—a rare privilege that symbolized their place in Tata’s heart.
In 2018, Tata’s loyalty to his pets took precedence over a prestigious event.
He had been invited to Buckingham Palace by King Charles III, then Prince Charles, to receive a lifetime achievement award for his philanthropic work.
However, when his cherished dog Tito fell seriously ill, Tata chose to remain by his side, canceling his trip to London.
The decision resonated with King Charles III, who praised Tata, saying, “That’s the man Ratan is".
A significant figure in Tata’s later years was Shantanu Naidu, a young Tata employee whose initiative to place reflective collars on street dogs caught Tata's attention.
Their shared love for animals formed the basis of a strong bond, eventually leading Tata to offer Naidu a job and a role in his philanthropic trust.
As friends, colleagues, and dignitaries gathered to honor Ratan Tata, the presence of Goa highlighted the depth of his empathy—a quality that defined him not only as an industrialist but as a compassionate human being who extended his kindness to all living creatures.
