In a unique move to protect the country from potential bedbug infestations, South Korea has deployed a specially trained sniffer dog, Ceco, at Incheon International Airport.
Ceco, a 2-year-old beagle with an incredible nose for detecting bedbug pheromones, is on duty as athletes and fans return from the Paris Olympics. With an accuracy rate exceeding 95 percent, Ceco is the only dog in South Korea trained to sniff out these tiny pests.
The deployment is part of a broader effort to keep South Korea free from bedbugs, which can easily hitch a ride on clothing or luggage
As the country's main international gateway, Incheon Airport is a critical point of defense, and Ceco's presence adds an extra layer of protection.
Alongside Ceco’s work, the government has ramped up disinfection efforts for flights arriving from Paris, increasing the frequency from once a month to once a week.
Ceco’s role highlights the amazing abilities of dogs to assist in public health efforts. His work is not just about keeping pests at bay but also about showcasing how well-trained animals can contribute to keeping people safe and comfortable.
This initiative also reflects South Korea's commitment to ensuring a pest-free environment, following its own experiences with bedbug outbreaks in 2023.
With Ceco on the front lines, South Korea is taking every possible step to prevent these pesky insects from causing trouble, showing just how valuable dogs can be in protecting our homes and communities.
