Inaugural Pet Gala: Dogs in Couture Inspired by Met Gala 2024

In a delightful blend of fashion and fun, the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City hosted the inaugural Pet Gala on May 20, 2024. This unique event, inspired by the illustrious Met Gala, featured an array of stylish canines donning couture outfits that mirrored the most iconic looks from this year's Met Gala.

The Pet Gala originated as a photo project in 2013 by Anthony Rubio, a renowned pet couturier and women's wear designer. For years, Rubio has been recreating Met Gala looks for dogs and sharing these chic transformations through annual photoshoots. However, 2024 marked a significant evolution of this project. Rubio collaborated with the AKC Museum of the Dog to bring the Pet Gala to life as a full-fledged event.

Rubio's dedication to fashion was evident as he spent the last two weeks meticulously crafting each canine outfit. His goal was to create pet-friendly renditions of the 2024 Met Gala outfits, ensuring that every detail was perfect.

“I want people to understand that we’re not making fun of the Met Gala. We’re not mimicking the Met Gala,” Rubio explained to the Associated Press. “We’re elevating and appreciating the wonderful designs presented at the Met Gala by the most talented designers in the world.”

The evening commenced with a red carpet setup on the steps of the AKC Museum of the Dog, where the fashionable pups posed for photos. Following the red carpet, the dogs and their human companions enjoyed a runway show and a seated dinner, celebrating the fusion of high fashion and canine charm.

Over a dozen dogs attended the Pet Gala, each wearing a unique creation by Rubio. The event was a showcase of creativity and craftsmanship, with outfits inspired by some of the Met Gala's standout looks. Among the highlights:

Rubio's Chihuahua, Kimba, also made an appearance, elegantly dressed in a gown inspired by Zendaya's 2024 Met Gala dress. Other notable mentions included Daffodil, who brought Jennifer Lopez's look to life, Livie the Morkie (Maltese/Yorkshire Terrier) who wore a recreation of Gigi Hadid's dress, and Saya, who wore a gown modeled after Shakira's Met Gala ensemble.
