A unique career path known as "pet detectives" has emerged in response to China's burgeoning pet population. As reported by The South China Morning Post, these specialists focus on locating lost dogs and cats, capitalizing on the strong emotional bonds Chinese pet owners have with their animals.
Predominantly self-employed, these detectives market their services via social media and e-commerce platforms, earning up to $4,200 (Rs 3,50,749) per month, as noted by Liu Wei, an active pet detective. The role requires stamina, physical fitness, sharp eyesight, and logical reasoning. Advanced tools like thermal imaging cameras, priced at around $2,800 (Rs 2,33,832), are also utilized to enhance search efforts.
This trend mirrors broader societal shifts. Searches for "looking for cats and dogs" on Xianyu, China's leading used goods e-commerce platform, have surged in the first half of the year, indicating a growing dependency on pets for emotional support.
Liu Wei, who started his business in 2012, faced initial financial struggles but continued due to the significant emotional impact of reuniting pets with their owners.
"I cannot describe how I feel at those moments," Liu shared, highlighting the profound satisfaction of his work, especially when elderly pet owners are reunited with their companions.
This profession reflects China's evolving attitudes toward pets, transforming what was once a niche service into a viable career driven by empathy and dedication. As the demand for pet detectives grows, it underscores the deepening relationship between people and their pets in modern Chinese society.
