Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his support for a remarkable initiative designed to aid stray dogs. Sharma spotlighted an innovative startup from Istanbul, Turkey, which merges recycling with animal welfare.
In his post, Sharma shared a video showcasing a unique project in Istanbul that feeds stray dogs through a recycling system, and expressed his desire to back such an initiative. "I will love to fund this, need some champion of change," Sharma wrote, without specifying whether his funding interest was for Turkey or India.
The initiative, created by Engin Girgin and Pugedon, features dog food recycling boxes placed in public areas. These machines have three compartments: one for recyclable plastics and cans, and two that dispense dog food and water when recyclable trash is deposited. This system helps feed over 150,000 stray dogs at no cost.
Sharma's endorsement sparked considerable attention and mixed reactions on social media. While many praised the potential to address animal welfare and promote eco-friendliness, others voiced concerns. One user commented, "STOP FEEDING STRAY DOGS. If you want to help, fund shelters for dogs to keep them away from people and cities." Another user expressed enthusiasm, saying, "Lovely project and I am in."
Amit Misra (@amit6060) highlighted the initiative's impact: "It's amazing how a simple act of recycling can make such a big difference in the lives of these animals. Imagine if every city adopted this approach—what a difference we could make!" Vivek Shukla (@vivekshukla) suggested a local champion: "There's a lady in Ghaziabad who's feeding and taking care of hundreds of dogs. She would benefit from the tech and funding greatly. Happy to connect you/your investment team to her. She's not on X."
However, not everyone was on board. Vishal Tehran (@Risk_to_Reward) raised concerns about safety, commenting, "Also keep funds for treating kids and elders who will be attacked by these stray dogs... Citizens pay road tax for usage, not for making them feeding grounds for stray dogs."
This initiative continues to garner attention and debate, highlighting the complex intersection of environmental sustainability and animal welfare.
