The forest and wildlife department of the Delhi Government has reported 27 peacock deaths, suspected to be caused by heatstroke, since June 4. Three of these deaths were confirmed on Tuesday following an inspection at the Palam air force station. The areas where the deaths occurred were heavily concretized and lacked sufficient food and water.
The Palam air force station has since been instructed to create watering holes and ensure adequate food for the birds. Each peacock death was reported to the Delhi Police emergency number 112, and the birds were given a ceremonial burial, wrapped in the tricolor, as per national protocol.
A postmortem conducted by the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre on June 17 confirmed heatstroke as the likely cause of death. Additional deceased peacocks have been sent to the Delhi Zoo for further examination. A forest department team, led by Deputy Range Officer (West) Rajesh Tandon, has been stationed at the base to monitor the situation.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohit Meena noted an increase in calls reporting peacock deaths from the air force station, attributing the rise to the harsh summer conditions. While peacocks typically survive in semi-arid climates, the high number of deaths is unusual. Faiyaz Khudsar, scientist in-charge at DDA's Biodiversity Parks Programme, emphasized the need for a thorough study to understand the cause of these deaths.
