Mumbai played host to Asia’s largest cat show, organized by the Feline Club of India (FCI), featuring over 500 cats from 13 different breeds. The event, held at the CIDCO exhibition centre in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, showcased cats including Persian, Siamese, Bengal, and Maine Coon varieties, attracting cat enthusiasts from across the city.
"We are all cat lovers that have come together to form this club," said Fakhruddin Motiwala, President and Secretary of FCI Mumbai. For the past four years, FCI has been hosting cat shows nationwide, with Mumbai boasting the largest cat population based on cat food consumption.
Judges evaluated the cats on grooming, temperament, cleanliness, and other physical attributes. One notable participant was Nayla, a 1.4-year-old white indie cat with blue eyes. "I wanted her to go out," said her owner, Naziya Sayyed. Naziya appreciated the opportunity to learn more about cat care and connect with other cat lovers at the event.
The exhibition featured stalls selling cat food, leashes, toys, and other accessories. Among the attendees was Danish Choudhary, who adopted Mimi, a 5-year-old Serbian long-haired cat. It was their first time at such an event. "It’s like a cult of cat lovers," Danish remarked, noting the exhilarating energy and camaraderie among participants.
Regular participant Simba, a 2.4-year-old Persian cat, was accompanied by his owners Fazal, Ruqaiyya, and Abbas. "I like the way they organize it. The judging is very fair," said Fazal. The event provided a platform for cat enthusiasts to observe new breeds and learn about the latest in cat care.
Some visitors do not own a cat but frequently open their homes to strays. "We've seen so many cats today. It’s nice that such events are happening in the city," they said, emphasizing the need for greater awareness.
The FCI aims to promote the cat fancy subculture, involving activities like cat appreciation, breeding, adoption, and showing. "We organize shows all over India," Motiwala explained, highlighting FCI's nationwide presence with over 30 regional clubs. The organization also conducts grooming sessions and workshops to educate cat owners and foster a sense of community among cat lovers. "Our main goal is to bring cat people together and spread awareness about cats," Motiwala said, outlining plans to expand their reach across the country.
