The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is progressing with the second phase of its pet park project in Jangpura by hiring a private company to develop play and exercise installations, as well as manage facilities such as a pet shop. The park, which spans one acre near the Jangpura-Defence Colony flyover, already features an enclosure with toys for dogs and graffiti depicting various dog breeds. Entry to the park will be restricted to pets that are registered and up-to-date with vaccinations.
The first phase, completed in January 2023 at a cost of ₹55 lakh funded by the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), included the installation of repurposed shipping containers serving as a veterinary clinic, grooming center, and cafeteria. The upcoming second phase will involve landscaping, adding mounds and water features, and installing waste stations. The chosen operator will have three months to develop the facilities and will also host pet parties and shows to engage the community.
Despite maintenance issues observed during a recent visit, the park’s overall condition remains intact. It was initially conceptualized in 2021 to provide a dedicated space for pet owners, modeled after similar parks in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Following the unification of Delhi's three civic bodies into the current MCD, the project’s second phase was delayed but eventually approved in December 2023. Officials cited financial benefits and enhanced accountability as reasons for involving a private operator, who will also run a 500 sq ft commercial area including a vet clinic, pet shop, and cafeteria.
To address the low registration rates of pet dogs in Delhi, the MCD will set up a license registration facility at the park. Rules for park use include prohibiting entry for puppies under four months, aggressive dogs, and those wearing prong collars. Pets must be leashed while entering and exiting, and a maximum of two dogs per person per visit is allowed. Animal rights activists advocate for more such parks across the city, emphasizing the need for open spaces for dogs to exercise and the importance of keeping entry fees affordable to encourage use.
