Sarah Bohan, a 26-year-old runner from Boston, was determined to set her personal best at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. However, around the 20-mile mark, she encountered an unexpected obstacle: a stranded kitten in need of help.

As Bohan approached a tunnel with roughly 5 miles remaining, she noticed a "white and fluffy" object on the sidewalk. Curious, she slowed down and discovered a tiny, frightened kitten.

"The kitten was dirty, scared, and skinny, and looked to be separated from its mother," Bohan explained.

Without hesitation, Bohan picked up the stray kitten. Despite her ambition to achieve a personal record, she knew she couldn't abandon the helpless animal. Bohan, an animal lover with two rescue cats at home, was also running with Team PAWS Chicago, a group supporting animal welfare.

Bohan made a quick decision: instead of putting the kitten back down, she chose to carry it and find it a safe home. Along the way, she met Gia Nigro, another marathon runner and animal enthusiast. Together, they searched for a bystander who could provide the kitten with a loving home.

About a mile later, they found a spectator who promised to care for the kitten. Relieved, Bohan handed over the little feline and continued her race. She and Nigro ran the remaining miles together and even helped an injured German runner cross the finish line.

Despite sacrificing her race time, Bohan's act of kindness drew attention and admiration. She has raised over $1,750 for PAWS Chicago, an organization dedicated to saving animals from euthanasia and finding them safe homes. Bohan plans to chase her personal record at the Boston Marathon in April and again at next year's Chicago Marathon, continuing her support for Team PAWS.

Sarah Bohan's story is a heartwarming reminder of the compassion and selflessness that can emerge even in the midst of a competitive race. Her decision to prioritize the kitten's safety over her personal achievement highlights the extraordinary kindness that defines true sportsmanship.
