An emperor scorpion and an iguana were taken from a Dewas home by Madhya Pradesh's State Tiger Strike Force (STSF), marking a significant step in the fight against the illicit trafficking in exotic creatures. With the implementation of the recently implemented Rule 49M of the modified Wildlife Protection Act (1972), this operation represents the first seizure of unregistered exotic animals.
The latest raid discovered that the emperor scorpion and the iguana, which are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, were not being kept with the required licenses or registration papers. The Wildlife Protection Act, as modified, mandates that certain animals be registered before they can be traded or maintained as pets.
The animals were quickly given to the Indore Zoo for treatment once the STSF inspectors found that they were not registered. In addition to identifying possible perpetrators outside the state, authorities have declared that an investigation is ongoing.
The Living Animal Species (Reporting and Registration) Rules 2024 were just put into effect when this seizure occurred. Strengthening the legal framework against the unlawful trade and possession of rare and endangered animals, these new laws mandate that every animal that is classified under CITES must be registered by August 31, 2024, using the PARIVESH site. In order to stop the illegal traffic in these creatures, breaking these regulations will have legal consequences and lead to further raids.
Officials stress that the operation is a component of a larger initiative to save wildlife and guarantee adherence to international and national regulations intended to preserve threatened and endangered species. The state's dedication to protecting wildlife and enforcing strict laws is reflected in the STSF's aggressive actions to safeguard exotic animals.
The authorities are asking the public to abide by the registration requirements and report any unlawful activity linked to the wildlife trade while the inquiry is ongoing. This case serves as a reminder of how crucial it is to follow wildlife protection regulations in order to safeguard biodiversity and stop the exploitation of threatened animals.
