Kukur Tihar, or the “Day of Dogs,” is a unique and heartwarming festival celebrated in Nepal as part of the larger five-day Hindu festival of Tihar, also known as Deepawali. This special day is dedicated to honoring dogs, who hold a significant place in both Nepali society and Hindu mythology. This year, the festival will fall on October 31.
In Nepalese culture, dogs are regarded as loyal companions and guardians. They are believed to be messengers of Yama, the god of death, and thus play an important role in guiding souls to the afterlife. On Kukur Tihar, dogs are thanked for their unwavering loyalty, protection, and friendship.
On this day, both pet dogs and stray dogs are celebrated equally. The festivities begin with the application of a red tika (a mixture of rice, yogurt, and vermillion) on the dog’s forehead, symbolizing their sacredness. They are adorned with marigold garlands around their necks, which signifies respect and blessing.
Families offer delicious foods like milk, meat, eggs, and high-quality dog treats to their canine companions. The act of feeding dogs is seen as a form of worship, showing gratitude for the protection and love that dogs provide.
Dogs have long been associated with gods in Hinduism. In the epic Mahabharata, a dog is depicted as the companion of the virtuous king Yudhishthira on his journey to heaven, symbolizing loyalty and faithfulness. Similarly, Bhairava, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, is often depicted with a dog as his vahana (vehicle).
Kukur Tihar is more than just a festival of dogs; it sends a broader message of compassion and care for all living beings. The festival emphasizes the bond between humans and animals, reminding people to respect and cherish all creatures.
In a world where animals are often mistreated, Kukur Tihar stands out as a shining example of love, respect, and reverence for the four-legged companions who share our lives. For many Nepalis, it’s a day to strengthen the bond with their pets, but for the stray dogs on the streets, it becomes a day of kindness, warmth, and recognition.
Kukur Tihar is not only a reflection of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage but also a beautiful testament to the country’s empathy towards animals. Tourists and animal lovers from around the world are drawn to Nepal during this time to witness this extraordinary celebration, where every dog is treated like royalty for a day.
As the world becomes more conscious of animal rights and welfare, Kukur Tihar stands as an inspiring tradition, reminding us of the importance of kindness towards animals, especially those who have earned the title of "man's best friend."
