The Karnataka High Court has taken steps to improve cleanliness in public parks by imposing stricter fines on pet owners who don’t clean up after their dogs. This decision comes after growing complaints about pet waste in Bengaluru parks.
The court directed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to change its rules so that pet owners face higher fines than regular cleanliness violations. This ruling followed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the NGO Compassion Unlimited Plus Action (CUPA), highlighting the unhygienic conditions caused by irresponsible pet ownership.
A bench led by Chief Justice N.V. Anjaria and Justice K.V. Aravind stated that owning a pet is a privilege, and pet owners must also ensure parks remain clean for everyone. The court instructed BBMP and the Horticulture Department to create a long-term cleanliness system, including inspection teams for regular monitoring.
The ruling also emphasized the need for awareness campaigns to educate pet owners about carrying bags to clean up after their pets.
With over 1,200 parks in Bengaluru, this initiative aims to make public spaces enjoyable for all while promoting responsible pet ownership.
