Gujarat has taken an innovative approach in its battle against illegal alcohol trade by deploying two specially trained Labradors, Adrev and Cemri, to detect alcohol within the state.
This is a first for Gujarat’s K9 unit, and it marks a proactive measure in countering bootlegging and illicit alcohol operations in a state where prohibition has been in effect since 1960.
Last week, Adrev, an 18-month-old Labrador, conducted his first detection operation in Rajkot’s Dhebar Colony.
Accompanied by Bhaktinagar police, Adrev reportedly identified traces of alcohol in the area, leading to a registered case against an alleged bootlegger, with further investigations now underway.
Cemri, Adrev’s counterpart, has been stationed in Banaskantha, a region bordering Rajasthan, which is known for frequent liquor smuggling through roadways.
The training program, lasting nine months and overseen by Colonel Chandansinh Rathore at the Gujarat Police Dog Training School in Naroda, Ahmedabad, prepared the dogs to signal the presence of alcohol by barking or pawing.
Confiscated liquor bottles were reportedly used during training sessions, enabling the dogs to accurately identify the scent through positive reinforcement.
Both dogs have since demonstrated proficiency in detecting alcohol-related substances.
This new strategy offers a potential advantage to Gujarat police, who have traditionally struggled to curb bootlegging and smuggling operations that frequently outmaneuver law enforcement.
Bootleggers typically employ covert methods, transporting liquor hidden in baggage on trains, buses, private vehicles, and trucks, which makes it challenging for authorities to intercept without concrete intelligence.
Adding alcohol-detecting dogs to the state’s toolkit could bolster efforts to disrupt this illegal trade and deter future offenders.
Currently deployed on an experimental basis, Adrev and Cemri’s work represents an expansion of the traditional roles of sniffer dogs, who are typically trained to detect narcotics, explosives, or firearms.
Authorities indicate that if successful, the initiative could be expanded, with more dogs trained and stationed across the state to support enforcement of Gujarat’s strict prohibition laws.
