On the occasion of the 246th Remount Veterinary Corps Day, the Indian Army demonstrated its commitment to honoring its loyal canine soldiers by gifting twelve retired military dogs to Asha Schools for special children and other compassionate individuals.
These remarkable dogs, once vital assets in national security and humanitarian efforts, are now embarking on a new mission—bringing joy and therapeutic benefits to their new families and communities.
Having served the nation in diverse terrains and challenging operational scenarios, these military dogs have shown exceptional courage and resilience.
Their roles included detecting explosives and mines, tracking, search-and-rescue missions, and guarding sensitive areas.
Indigenous breeds like the Rampur Hound, Mudhol Hound, Combai, Chippiparai, and Rajapalayam, alongside traditional working dog breeds, have increasingly taken on these critical responsibilities for the Army.
Now retired, these canine heroes are finding a meaningful second life.
Adopted by schools for children with special needs, they are playing a therapeutic role, helping students improve social, emotional, and cognitive skills.
Families and individuals adopting these dogs gain not only a loyal companion but also the chance to provide a loving home to a patriot who has served the nation selflessly.
After their years of service, these dogs are cared for at the Canine Geriatric Centre in Meerut Cantt, where they enjoy dedicated care in their retirement.
The Indian Army also operates similar facilities for its retired equine and canine soldiers, ensuring they receive the same dignity, comfort, and care as their human counterparts.
This thoughtful initiative highlights the Indian Army's respect and compassion for all who serve the nation, human and animal alike.
By repurposing retired military dogs to continue spreading love and support in their retirement, the Army sets a powerful example of dedication to its silent warriors and the unbreakable bond between humans and animals.
