The Indian Army is renowned not only for its valiant soldiers but also for its dedicated service dogs, who play crucial roles in various operations such as detecting explosives and tracking adversaries. One such hero, Meru, a 9-year-old tracker dog from the 22 Army Dog Unit, recently made headlines with his stylish journey into retirement.
Meru traveled to the Dogs Retirement Home at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Center in Meerut in an AC First Class train carriage. This comfortable travel was enabled by a recent decision from the Ministry of Defence, which now allows retired service dogs to travel with their handlers in luxury. Photos of Meru's journey have gone viral, showing him enjoying his own berth, stretching his legs in the train's corridor, and gazing out the window.
An X user shared these heartwarming images, noting, “Army Tracker Dog Meru from the 22 Army Dog Unit boarded a train to Meerut on retirement. He is traveling in AC first class, a recent privilege granted by the Ministry of Defence to retired service dogs and their handlers.”
The post garnered affectionate reactions from social media users. Comments ranged from admiration of Meru's cuteness and gratitude for his service to discussions on the travel accommodations for dogs on Indian Railways, where AC First Class is the only option that allows them comfort outside of a cage in the brake van.
Moreover, it was highlighted that army dogs like Meru can be adopted post-retirement, with adopters required to sign a bond ensuring the dog’s continued care—a significant shift from the past practice of euthanizing service dogs who could no longer serve.
Meru’s journey to a well-deserved retirement in Meerut exemplifies the growing recognition and respect for the invaluable service provided by these canine members of the army.
Wishing Meru a joyful and peaceful retirement filled with love and relaxation!
