Following a complaint about the mistreatment of two Alexandrine parakeets in Aundh, Pune, officials from the Pune Forest Department, alongside a team from PETA India, successfully rescued the birds. The parakeets were being held illegally in a small, dingy cage at a residence. Consequently, the forest department registered an offence against the couple responsible for the captivity of these protected birds.
Acting on a tip-off, the Pune Forest Department officials visited the apartment on June 28 and found three parakeets confined in inadequate conditions. The birds were immediately seized, and an offence was registered against Balasaheb Satpute and his wife, Suman Satpute.
The rescued parakeets were then sent to the RESQ Charitable Trust for a health check-up, treatment, and temporary rehabilitation. They will be released back into their natural habitat once they have fully recovered.
Alexandrine parakeets are listed under Schedule 2 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, making it illegal to buy, sell, or possess them. Violations can result in fines up to ₹1 lakh, a jail term of up to three years, or both. PETA India has written to the Maharashtra Forest Department, urging them to take strict action against the violators under the relevant sections of the WPA.
Deepak Pawar, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Pune Forest Department, confirmed the offence against the couple and stated that a chargesheet is being prepared for submission to the court.
Sunayana Basu, PETA India Cruelty Response Coordinator, expressed gratitude towards the Pune Forest Department, particularly Mahadev Mohite, Deputy Conservator of Forests, for their prompt action. She encouraged the public to report any instances of animal cruelty to local animal protection groups, the police, or the forest department if wild animals are involved.
