In Delhi, the celebration of Independence Day took a tragic turn as more than 100 birds were injured or killed by banned glass-coated kite strings, known as “Chinese manjha.”

Despite a strict ban in place since 2017, the dangerous string continues to wreak havoc on the city’s bird population.

Rescue centers and bird hospitals reported numerous cases of injuries, particularly among crows, pigeons, and black kites, with the numbers expected to rise as kite flying continues until Rakshabandhan on August 19.

The injured birds, primarily crows and pigeons, were found with severe wounds, often on their wings or other body parts, caused by the sharp manjha. Despite efforts to treat these injuries, many birds may never fly again, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by the illegal kite strings.

Rescue centers across the city, including the Jain Charitable Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk and the Wildlife Rescue Centre in Wazirabad, have been working tirelessly to care for these injured birds.

Authorities, meanwhile, have stepped up efforts to curb the use and sale of the banned manjha.

Delhi Police have seized over 14,000 rolls of Chinese manjha and registered nearly 200 FIRs against violators.

However, the enforcement of the ban remains a challenge, with lenient penalties and the continued availability of the manjha in local markets contributing to the ongoing issue.

The persistence of this problem highlights the need for stricter enforcement and greater public awareness to protect Delhi's birds from further harm.

As the city gears up for more kite-flying celebrations, the tragic consequences of this festive tradition serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal kite strings.
