A very common animal painkiller Nimesulide was banned last week as it was found to be toxic to raptors. The compound is widely used as a painkiller for animals including horses, pigs, and cattle. According to the report covered by the Times of India, it was found that when vultures fed on the carcasses of these animals, they suffered from elevated uric acid counts, resulting in swift mortality rates, especially for the younger raptors.
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) issued the ban under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The research conducted by ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, highlighted the harmful effects and compared its effects with NSAIDs like diclofenac and ketoprofen, which were banned in 2006, and 2023 respectively.
Unfortunately, these common painkillers are still being used in rural areas. While there are safer alternatives like Meloxicam and Tolfenamic acid, future research on drug toxicity on common meds like paracetamol is going on.
Till 2023 a fixed-dose combination with paracetamol was given to humans as a painkiller. However, the compound was banned in June 2023 due to health risks and lack of therapeutic justification.
The banned combinations were targeted at common infections like cough and fever. They included Chlorpheniramine Maleate and Codeine Syrup, Pholcodine and Promethazine, and Amoxicillin and Bromhexine, among others.
