Ancient Relics, Modern Cats: Experience Shanghai Museum's 'Meow Night' With Your Furry Companion!

Shanghai Museum has attracted visitors this summer with an exhibition of ancient Egyptian relics, featuring cat statues and other feline imagery.

The exhibit, titled "Top of the Pyramids: Ancient Egyptian Civilization Exhibition," includes a special event called "Meow Night," where up to 200 guests can bring their cats to the museum on select Saturday nights.

This unique experience is inspired by the ancient Egyptians' worship of Bastet, the goddess of protection, often depicted as a cat.

Shanghai Museum's Deputy Director, Li Feng, told India Today that "Meow Night" was designed to honor the ancient Egyptian connection to cats.

This idea came after Egyptian archaeological teams discovered a cat temple in Saqqara, unearthing many cat mummies and statues.

The exhibition began on July 19, 2023 and will continue until August 17, 2025, featuring ten "Meow Night" events. Six events have already taken place, with all tickets, including those for cat entries, selling out.

During "Meow Night," visitors can bring their cats in carriers or pet strollers, with specific areas set up for photo opportunities next to statues of Bastet. To ensure safety, all cats are checked upon entry for up-to-date vaccinations and signs of illness or stress.

The museum also provides veterinarians and rest areas to help cats relax if the experience becomes overwhelming.

Many visitors are excited about the chance to explore the exhibition with their cats, believing their pets may be linked to the cats domesticated in ancient Egypt.

This unique event offers a blend of historical exploration and modern pet companionship, creating a memorable experience for both cats and their owners.
