The Delhi Forest and Wildlife Department has registered eight exotic species under the new Living Animal Species Rules, 2024.

Pet owners in Delhi are required to register their exotic pets on the Centre's Parivesh Portal 2.0 by August 31 to comply with regulations.

Failure to do so could result in legal consequences.

The exotic species registered so far include a ball python, iguana, cockatiel, red-eared slider turtle, African grey parrot, Amazonian parrot, blue-headed parrot, and conure.

To complete the registration, pet owners must submit their information on the Parivesh Portal 2.0 and pay a fee of ₹1,000 via a demand draft to the Delhi Forest Department.

Officials have noted that the exact number of registered exotic pets will only be known after the deadline on August 31, as the data will be compiled from submissions to the Parivesh Portal.

As of now, less than ten owners have registered their pets with the forest department by submitting the necessary demand draft.

It’s also possible to register multiple exotic animals on the same form, but a separate fee is required for each application.

The Living Animal Species Rules, 2024, mandates that anyone possessing an exotic pet listed under Schedule 4 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, must report the details of such animals and register them electronically.

This initiative aims to maintain oversight on the care of exotic species and prevent illegal smuggling.

The collected data will be shared with the state’s Chief Wildlife Warden to monitor the wellbeing of these exotic pets.

The Delhi Forest Department has indicated that penalties and legal actions will be enforced in accordance with the Union Environment Ministry's directives for any violations of these rules.
