The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has begun equipping their fire trucks with pet-friendly oxygen masks, significantly improving the chances of saving pets affected by fires. These masks are designed to deliver 85 to 90% oxygen to animals, a stark contrast to the mere 15% provided by human masks.
Paul Jones, an operational group trainer, emphasized the importance of these masks, stating their wider availability would make a "big difference" in emergency situations. The masks, purchased from the non-profit organization Smokey Paws, are essential for providing care to pets at the scene of fires.
Unlike human masks, these animal masks feature a conical design to fit snugly over a pet’s snout. Jones highlighted that while firefighters have previously used makeshift systems to provide oxygen to animals, the new Smokey Paws equipment allows them to offer evidence-based trauma care and enhance their service to the community.
