At just three months old, Carlos, a playful Belgian Malinois, is already being groomed for an important role in the Greater Chennai Police’s detective dog squad.
Although he currently spends his days frolicking around the dog squad campus in Kilpauk, Carlos is set to become a vital asset in the fight against crime
Alongside four other recently added puppies, Carlos will soon be trained to detect narcotics, explosives, or even assist in high-profile security operations, such as those involving the Prime Minister.
The initial phase of training for these young recruits begins with basic obedience exercises, teaching them to respond to simple commands like “sit,” “salute,” and “down.”
Once they reach six months of age, the puppies will be sent to the St. Thomas Mount Centre for specialized training in their respective fields—explosives detection, narcotics, or crime scene investigation.
Training starts with play-based activities, gradually introducing the dogs to their future tasks. For instance, tracker dogs begin by finding hidden bones, progressing to human scent identification and discrimination, which is crucial for tracking suspects.
The explosives detection dogs, which include three Labrador puppies, are familiarized with the scent of gunpowder from an early age. As their training advances, they learn to identify the correct bag containing gunpowder among several options.
The training program spans six months, but the learning doesn’t stop there. Throughout their careers, these dogs undergo regular refresher courses, with their handlers ensuring daily practice to maintain their sharp skills.
Once fully trained, these dogs play a critical role in securing high-profile events.
The explosives detection dogs, for example, are responsible for clearing routes for the Chief Minister, other VIPs, and even the Prime Minister.
They inspect any suspicious vehicles, bags, or objects, ensuring the safety of everyone involved. The squad has recently been instrumental in clearing multiple bomb threats in schools across the city.
At crime scenes, the dogs use their incredible sense of smell to track suspects based on clues like a piece of clothing or even fingerprints.
These highly disciplined dogs are trained not to bite unless commanded and are immune to distractions like food or other animals while on duty.
Life at the dog squad training center is filled with care and affection. The center is stocked with toys, vitamins, and other essentials to ensure the dogs' well-being. The handlers, who share a deep bond with their canine partners, provide round-the-clock care, feeding, and training.
The dogs’ careers with the police force typically last until they are 12 years old, after which they retire to the center in Madhavaram. For the handlers, saying goodbye to their loyal partners is often the hardest part of the job.
Among the current squad members, Arjun, Karigalan, Judy, and Thamarai stand out as seasoned veterans. These Doberman siblings have solved numerous cases, including detecting locally made bombs and tracking down burglars.
Their success is a testament to the strong bond formed between each dog and its dedicated handler, who remain partners until the dogs retire.
The sniffer dog squad operates 24/7, ready to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice.
Sundays are the only day off, known as “kuli party” or bath day, when the dogs are treated to a relaxing wash.
The adult dogs are fed a nutritious diet of dog food, boiled meat, vegetables, and rice, while the puppies enjoy five meals a day to support their growth and training.
As Carlos and his fellow recruits continue their journey from playful puppies to elite crime-fighters, they are poised to become indispensable members of the Greater Chennai Police, dedicated to keeping the city safe.
