In a controversial move, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) demolished a cat shelter in Panch Pakhadi amid heavy rains, leaving animal carers distressed.
The shelter, home to over 200 cats, was reportedly torn down on Wednesday night at the behest of a local corporator who claimed the cats disturbed senior citizens in the area. As a result, over 150 cats are now missing.
Local animal carers have been caring for the cats at the Kachrale Talao garden for over five years. The demolition, which occurred during a downpour, has raised concerns about the welfare of the displaced cats.
After meeting with TMC officials, the carers were assured that the shelter would be rebuilt soon.
However, animal activists from People for Animals (PFA) have criticized the TMC's actions as cruel and insensitive. They argue that relocating the cats is inhumane and that efforts should focus on providing immediate shelter and protection for the animals.
The TMC is currently investigating the incident further. Meanwhile, activists stress that destroying animal shelters and displacing animals is an unacceptable form of cruelty.
