In a major crackdown on illegal wildlife trafficking, the Delhi Department of Forest and Wildlife rescued 736 protected birds from two shops in Jama Masjid’s Kabootar Market. The operation, conducted on Thursday evening, was led by the Deputy Conservator of Forests (Central Division) following a credible tip-off about the illegal captivity of these birds.
The raid revealed numerous cages, both metal and plastic, housing the birds in cramped and inhumane conditions. Upon spotting the raiding team, the shop owners fled, leaving the birds behind.
Local police officers assisted in the thorough search, leading to the seizure of 325 Scaly Breasted Munias, 190 Rose Ringed Parakeets, 123 Black Headed Munias, 39 Red Munias, 37 Alexandrine Parakeets, and 22 Plum Headed Parakeets. All these species are protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act.
The rescued birds are now housed at a central forest division facility where they are receiving proper care, food, and water. They will be observed for a period before being released into the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary to ensure their safe return to the wild.
The operation was a coordinated effort involving wildlife inspectors, foresters, animal handlers, and local police. A case has been registered under several sections of the Wildlife Protection Act at the Jama Masjid police station.
Authorities are investigating the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible for the illegal operation and exploring links to a larger network involved in the illicit trade of protected birds in the Kabootar Market.
