As Delhi grapples with the aftermath of record-breaking June rains, compassionate residents across the National Capital Region (NCR) are stepping up to help stray dogs by constructing shelters. June’s rainfall set an 88-year record for the highest 24-hour downpour, leaving many Delhiites focused on safeguarding their homes. Amid these challenges, some residents prioritize the well-being of the city's stray animals. Thanks to several young activists in NCR, numerous stray dogs now have shelters to protect them from the heavy rains.
Among these animal advocates is Jigyasa Dhingra, a psychology student based in Gurugram. Partnering with local carpenters, Dhingra has built doghouses using rainproof and rust-resistant fiber sheets.
"These street-side shelters can withstand the monsoon and resist rust and moss, offering a permanent refuge for strays," says Dhingra, founder of the NGO PawsInPaws. She has strategically placed a dozen new doghouses around Gurugram and West Delhi.
In Delhi, some residents opt for traditional wooden dog houses. Sagar Sharma, a history student living in Safdarjung Enclave, is one such individual. Volunteering with the NGO Helping Hands, Sharma constructs dog homes and provides blankets and bedding for the strays.
"With these shelters, at least the dogs will have a cozy place to return to after the rain. We use jute bedding, which dries quickly and ensures comfort for the animals," he explains.
Taking sustainability a step further, the Noida-based NGO Save Strays repurposes discarded animal cages into dog shelters. "We collect cages from pet stores, add a roof, and transform them into kennels that can accommodate one or two dogs," says Sudhanshu Singh, an engineering student volunteering with Save Strays. Singh also emphasizes the importance of reflective collars for strays during the monsoon to prevent accidents involving vehicles. "It's our responsibility to ensure their safety," he adds.
These efforts by Delhi NCR residents highlight a community's dedication to protecting and caring for stray animals, ensuring they have safe shelters during the challenging monsoon season.
