The nation's largest paramilitary force has made it possible for the general public to adopt retired sniffer and attack dogs through the CRPF's first-ever digital initiative, providing these four-legged soldiers with a comfortable second chance at life.

In response to worries about possible abuse of their sophisticated abilities, no security force in India has permitted the public adoption of trained canines before.

Up until recently, state police and the federal government had sent their retired canines to reputable organisations or recognised NGOs to care for.

The CRPF's specialised Dog Breeding and Training School (DBTS) near Bengaluru will oversee the adoption process for over 30 dogs from four breeds: Belgian Shepherd Malinois, German Shepherd, Labrador, and the native Mudhol Hound.

These 8–12-year-old dogs have participated in hundreds of operations throughout the nation's anti-Naxal, counter-insurgency, and counter-terrorism theatres, saving the lives of countless soldiers from infantry patrol and assault, improvised explosive detection and tracking, and other situations.

The Adoption Process:

  • The adoption is free
  • View the website to obtain basic information and photos of the dogs for adoption
  • Fill out a form indicating the "motivation and intent" for adopting a K9 dog
  • The CRPF reviews applications.
  • Final authority approval.
  • Meeting with the chosen dog to determine compatibility.
  • Signing an adoption agreement and completing the adoption procedure.
  • Follow-ups following adoption.

The CRPF portal features a brief biography, photo, and citation of these "soldier buddies," emphasising that the adopter is responsible for providing the "K9 hero" with respect, diligence, and compassion.

As part of this adoption procedure, the force will offer a KCI (Kennel Club of India) registration certificate, medical and immunisation records, and other important documentation for these dogs, as well as sign a "legally-binding" agreement with the adopter.

The rules and conditions of the adoption process explicitly state that the K9 will not be subjected to "abuse or ill-treatment" and that they will not be sold, used for any kind of profit-making, or used against anyone.

According to the instructions, "periodic verification" of the adopted canines by CRPF personnel should be permitted.

This includes regular connection with the handlers via live videoconferencing and brief videos.

The rules also state that the adopter should provide necessary emotional support if the K9 is found to be distressed and provide care as per the requirement of a geriatric dog.

This program demonstrates CRPF's dedication to protecting the welfare of its retiring canine warriors and encouraging community involvement in giving them a loving and tranquil home.
